Let’s Chat D2C - My Top Takeaways from Shopify’s Enterprise Partner Summit

Last week, I spent two days in LA at Shopify’s Enterprise Partner Summit, meeting with tech partners, attending events, and, most importantly, diving into all of the presentations from Shopify’s leadership team showcasing where the product is headed and how we can all support one another in growing together.

My Top Takeaways

1️⃣ Shopify has always dominated in the $125M and less GMV category, but they are crushing it this year in $125M+, winning hand-over-fist against competitors such as Salesforce Commerce Cloud and commercetools.

2️⃣ 2023 is a new environment and dynamic for enterprise merchants, emphasizing getting leaner while increasing ROI.

3️⃣ Shopify is investing in strategic partnerships, such as WPP, TOTVS, and Adyen, to work upmarket faster.

4️⃣ In new regions, such as Asia and EMEA, partnerships are driving the most new business.

5️⃣ Building towards an all-in-one commerce platform with B2B and POS. Manage your entire commerce offering across online, in-store, and B2B directly within the same admin and backend. A TON of updates will be coming for B2B and POS in 2024.

6️⃣ Tobias Lütke is the key driving force behind where Shopify's product is heading and a differentiator versus non-founder-led companies.

7️⃣ SO MUCH DATA. No other commerce platform understands its consumers better, and Shopify is able to leverage all of these customers' events to create products like Shopify Audiences that reduce CACs by up to 50%. But where is this headed? Towards enabling 1:1 personalization for merchants.

8️⃣ Beyond B2B and POS, Shopify is taking its commerce platform global with significant updates to its Markets Pro product offering powered by Global-e.

9️⃣ The not-so-sexy stuff: Inventory & Fulfillment, Payments, and Operations & Compliance are getting major upgrades heading into next year, including better BOPIS functionality, the opening of new APIs, and enhanced staging capabilities.

🔟 AI: While still in its infancy, think about how AI can be leveraged in all of the aforementioned products to make merchants' lives easier. Beyond that, Shopify has a competitive advantage because of its massive data pool, giving AI models significantly more training firepower.

My very first book is headed to print in the next two weeks! I've been working on this since the acquisition of Electriq last year, and I'm super excited to finally get it out into the wild just in time for the holidays!

I break down all of my lessons and mistakes, including all of the not-sexy stuff of starting and running your own biz, how to create a thriving culture that is team-led, building resiliency in your organization, knowing how and where to delegate, the concept of continual improvement, building for scale, and creating and executing an exit strategy.
