Let’s Chat D2C - Meta and Amazon Partnership for Social Commerce

Meta and Amazon have teamed up to allow customers to shop Amazon’s Facebook and Instagram ads and check out with Amazon without leaving the social media apps.

Customers, after linking their Meta account to their Amazon account, will be able to see:

  • Real-time pricing

  • Prime eligibility

  • Delivery estimates

  • Product details

The in-app shopping feature will also be available for select products advertised by independent sellers on Amazon’s storefront.

Partnership Implications

Better targeting and optimization of ads, as well as the ability to adjust messaging and products based on whether or not the user is a Prime member.

Better conversion rates due to the fast checkout process.

The partnership also completely bypasses any challenges with Apple’s App Tracking Transparency policy, providing a true closed-loop performance engine.

Meta has pushed its Shops sellers to use its own checkout experience where they charge processing fees on those sales (except for shops powered by Shopify, then Shopify charges them), but with this deal, Meta will not be charging processing fees. This could be negatively impactful to Shopify as they make 80+% of their revenue from payments, and this partnership gives Amazon the payment volume.

Amazon is also a winner here as they’ve tried to build their own social platform in the past to facilitate this behavior but were never able to get it off the ground.

Meta provides the discovery platform with an audience and Amazon provides the commerce and logistics. A win-win for customers.

TikTok Shop is in direct competition with this partnership as it focuses on becoming a vertically integrated solution. We’ll see which strategy pays off in the long run!
